We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families by Philip Gourevitch

Who knew a massacre could be so boring? I don’t mean to make light of the situation, but We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families is pretty political, covering many years of Rwandan history both before and after the massacre as well as general African politics. It was certainly informational, and I thought it was well written and kept my attention reasonably well despite the fact that I don’t generally follow politics. However, I was disappointed that the coverage of the actual massacre wasn’t very deep or extensive. The chapter on the hotel that sheltered people from the massacre was the most interesting of the book so it’s no surprise that that’s the one that became a movie. I wish there had been more chapters like that one that really captured the people who were involved – more micro, less macro.
