You&#8217;re all over time, though mostly in one place, and the result is initially off-putting and disjointed.  But eventually a full fledged story does emerge and one that kept my attention.  These are interesting characters you&#8217;ll root for, though I&#8217;m not so into the down home thing that I&#8217;ll read any more of her books.<\/p>\n<p>When I was reading this I happened to also be reading I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.  Both are set in the South during similar timeframes but the main characters are white in one book and black in the other.
