Beloved by Toni Morrison

The copy of Beloved I read had a foreward, by the author, which gave away the plot. It told the secret of who Beloved was and what had happened to her. Now I don’t know why Toni Morrison would do that (at least put it at the end of the book or put a big huge “spoiler” tag on it), but I’m also not sure I’d have ever gotten it without being told.

Beloved is kind of obscure in parts. It’s mystical and yet real and it’s hard to know when she’s describing something that’s actually happening and when she’s being metaphorical. She rarely says what’s happening outright. Very deep but murky. Despite this being rated the best book of the last decade, or whatever award it won recently, I had a hard time following it and it didn’t captivate me.
