Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton
The story of two African families, one white and one black, coming together through misfortune, Cry, The Beloved Country is told in a variety of manners, sometimes personally and sometimes from a great distance. It’s informational without being preachy and does a great job of conveying the problem without pretending it has a solution. At times the prose is almost poetical in its description of the countryside but the overall tone is one of gloom and despair, though leading torwards to hope at the end.
