A short diversion

Romy and I took a little side trip to Rumney on lovely Spring day. I’ll be heading out shortly for Devil’s Tower so a day of easy bolt clipping was a nice diversion.

Sport v. Trad

Our rental car in Tuolumne was an automatic, as most rental cars in the US are. I’ve always driven a standard, from my first car when I had no choice (cheaper) through my most recent car when the dealer had to go out of his way to find the model I wanted without the [...]

Still not a 12

OK, I wasn’t even trying. But if I had been, I wouldn’t have gotten close. Most of these routes were repeats but Milktoast, the hardest route I led and the only new one, took more than a little work. I wasn’t sure I was ever going to make it past that crux [...]

Trying Todd

Todd’s been asking if we could climb together almost since the day we broke up. I finally said yes, but sport only. It’s not that I dislike spending time with him; he’s become one of my best friends. It’s that I’ve been climbing so much better since we split and I don’t [...]

Two 12s

Not clean, of course. But I did get on two 12s this weekend rather than the usual one. I mean, I got on the usual one, and then another one. Brien and I were talking in the parking lot about Orangahang, about how we’d both watched people, like our friend Christine, on [...]

Dry rock at Rumney

Having had a little too much of Gunks seepage, I escaped to Rumney with Dan where I made another pitiful attempt on my 12. Everyone must try my 12. No one can do it but Scott (and eventually Todd) but all must try. I did finally figure out the sequence on Bullwinkle [...]

New Hampshire Waterfalls

where does one go on Memorial Day weekend? If one wishes to avoid the crowds that is… Clearly not Cathedral Ledge.
I went to Cathedral Ledge.
First we climbed – very slowly – two pitches of a route that all the locals kept pointing us to but which was, surprisingly, free. This should have [...]

Waiting in the Rain

A long day with a lot of waiting around, unfortunately. A bit of a wait in the morning as Scott and I were quicker and more prompt than some and then a long wait at the end of the day when it started to rain and Scott and I bailed and the rest [...]

Closer . . . clooooser

So I’m onsighting this 11. The crux is a long move to a horn, very steep. The end of the rope pulls through unexpectedly and whips me in the eye, blinding me, but I pull off the onsight anyway.
OK, it didn’t happen quite like that but the real story is just [...]
